In February-March 2008 an initiative was conducted at Salut to help determine future goals and strategies. The initiative examined the four major subjects of excavation, conservation, restoration, presentation.
Excavation focused on the large-scale removal of debris from outside the main wall on the east side of the site, including the tower/bastion that projects onto the adjacent plain.
Conservation sought to assess the state of preservation of the mud-brick structures; a number of trial tests had been done inside the area denominated 'corridor-like', in order to find a suitable way to preserve the original mud-brick surfaces and to prevent further decay.
Restoration examined ways of maintaining pre-existing structures and of proceeding with preliminary reconstruction of sections of the main masonry wall surrounding the site. This campaign saw commencement of the partial reconstruction of the upper part of the tower/bastion.
A complete plan of presentation of the site has been drafted with an eye to opening the site to the general public. This plan calls for the formulation of strategies and suggestions for access routes, parking and visitor facilities and the identification of key points of historical interest.
