Exhibition "Anatomy of the World - Science and Art on the Papyrus of Artemidorus / Anatomie der Welt – Wissenschaft und Kunst auf dem Artemidor-Papyrus" - Berlin, 13 March - 30 June 2008The new papyrus of Artemidorus, a unique document of science and art in ancient times, is on show at the Egyptian Museum from 13 March 2008. The front of the papyrus, originally 2.5 meters in width, is covered in text passages written down by the Greek geographer Artemidorus who lived at the turn of the 1st century BC in Ephesos. From his descriptions of the earth, the preface and the beginning of the book on Spain are preserved in the papyrus. In the space between the third and the fourth column, a map has been inserted. Additionally, the entire back of the papyrus as well as the every available free space on the front have been covered with high-quality drawings of human heads and limbs as well as exotic animals.
