XXIV Congresso Internazionale di Papirologia


The OPENING CEREMONY will take place on Sunday, August 1st, 2004 at 6.00 p.m. in the Great Hall of the University of Helsinki, Main Building, entrance Unioninkatu 34. After the ceremony there will be a reception in the lobby of the University Main Building.


The WORKING SESSIONS of the congress start on Monday, August 2nd, 2004, at 9 a.m. and the programme finishes on Saturday, August 7th, 2004 before lunch. All sessions will take place in the University Main Building, entrance Fabianinkatu 33.


II CONGRESS PROGRAMME
Papers and communications should be in one of the four languages generally used at papyrological conferences (English, French, German, or Italian). The programme is designed as follows:


1. Papers
Papers will be grouped according to topic and should not exceed 15 minutes. The preliminary division of the sessions is:
A. Collections, preservation and conservation
B. Literary & semi-literary papyri
C. Papyri and biblical studies
D. Religion and magic
E. Juristic papyrology
F. Onomastics and prosopography
G. Linguistics
H. Social and cultural history
I. Economy
J. Topography
K. Material culture
L. Palaeography
M. Papyri of the Near East
N. Herculanensia
O. Papyrology and Egyptology (Demotic, Coptic, Arabic)
P. Digital technology


2. Workshops
We suggest that papers which discuss a single text, especially a new or interesting papyrus, would preferably be placed in a workshop. Presentations in workshops should not exceed 10 minutes, followed by discussion. The preliminary division of the workshops is:
1. Documentary papyri, Ptolemaic (Greek / Demotic)
2. Documentary papyri, Roman (Greek / Latin / Demotic / Coptic)
3. Documentary papyri, Late Antiquity (Greek / Latin / Coptic / Arabic)
4. Literary or semi-literary papyri


3. Posters
Posters can be displayed in the lobby of the Small Hall for the duration of the congress. Additional information on a paper, workshop or other project (e.g., cartographical or archaeological studies etc.) may also be included. The posters should be handed in at the beginning of the congress (Monday, August the 1st, after 8.30 a.m.) at the congress desk in the lobby. Posters will be listed in the proceedings of the congress but not reproduced.


GUIDELINES FOR PRESENTATIONS AND ABSTRACTS


Participants giving papers or participants who wish to present a text in a workshop or a poster are requested to send their topic, abstract, and choice of session to the organisers, preferably by e-mail (papycongress-2004@helsinki.fi). Participants should also indicate whether a slide projector, overhead projector, video recorder or equipment for a computer presentation will be required.


Abstracts of papers, presentations in workshops, and posters should be submitted by February 27th, 2004. The abstract should include: title of the paper, author's name and summary of contents.


The maximum length for the abstract is 250 words. Please use 12 point Times New Roman font for Latin characters. The abstract text should not include subheadings, tables, figures or references and preferably should be written as one paragraph.


At the end of the abstract, please indicate your suggestion for the session (see above, A.–P.) or the workshop (see above, 1.–4.). All participants giving papers or presenting a text in a workshop should also include a short curriculum vitae for the chairpersons along with the abstract.


Abstracts in electronic form, on discs or as e-mails are preferable. We suggest that you send in the abstract as an e-mail attachment in .rtf-format to papycongress-2004@helsinki.fi, and give as subject 'abstract'.


The abstracts are subject to review by the Congress Committee, and acceptance of the presentations will be announced personally by March 31st, 2004. A brochure containing abstracts will be included in the conference information folders.


PROCEEDINGS

Detailed information on how to contribute to the proceedings will be given out at the conference. Papers should be handed in by December 31st, 2004.

REGISTRATION AND INFORMATION DESKS DURING THE CONGRESS


The Congress Office at the University Main Building (entrance Unioninkatu 34) will be open on Sunday, August 1st, 2004 from 3.00 p.m. until 6.00 p.m. Registration is also possible from Monday morning 8.30 a.m. throughout the week in the lobby of the Small Hall (Main Building, entrance Fabianinkatu 33, 4th floor).


CANCELLATION AND REFUND


Cancellations of any kind have to be made in writing to Congreszon Ltd. Please note that for organisational reasons, refunds will be made after the Congress. All refunds will be made at that day's exchange rate. The organisers or the congress office cannot be held responsible for a loss caused by alterations in exchange rates.


Cancellation of participation
Registration fees are refundable after a deduction of 50 € for administrative expenses should you cancel your registration by May 31st, 2004.
No refund will be issued for cancellations received after June 1st, 2004.
There will be no refund for no-shows.


Cancellation of room reservation and tours
Should you cancel your hotel room or tour reservation by May 31st, 2004, a refund of 50% of the total payment will be issued. No refund will be paid for cancellations received after June 1st, 2004.


BOOK DISPLAYS


Books can be displayed in lecture room 14 of the Main Building (Fabianinkatu 33, 4th floor). Publishers and book dealers wishing to have a stand for books offered at a reduced price to conference participants should contact the Congress Office, Congreszon.


HOTELS


Accommodation during the congress has been reserved at the following hotels. Please note when reserving a double room that both names should be listed on the form. Reservations will be handled on a first-come–first-served basis. Should the hotel you have chosen be fully booked, Congreszon will reserve you accommodation at another hotel of the same price category.
Congreszon cannot guarantee availability of hotel rooms for reservations received after May 31st, 2004.
The prices include breakfast and VAT.


Hotel deposit
A deposit of one night should be paid in advance together with the registration fee. The hotel deposit will be deducted from your final hotel bill when you check out of the hotel.
We are unable to accept reservations without a deposit as a guarantee.
Your hotel reservation will be confirmed when Congreszon has received the deposit.


Alterations and cancellations
All alterations or cancellations for accommodations should be sent to Congreszon in writing, not to the hotel.


Hotel descriptions
Ramada Hotel Presidentti: A business class hotel close to the railway station and Finnair bus terminal within a twelve minutes' walk to the University.
Price: Single room 152 € / night, double room 181 € / night (incl. Breakfast and VAT)
Hotel Helka: A comfortable, peaceful tourist class hotel in the city centre within 15 minutes' walking distance from the University.
Price: Single room 102 € / night, double room 129 € / night (incl. breakfast and VAT)
Eurohostel: A modest but clean and popular youth hostel close to the congress venue and within walking distance of the city centre. Rooms are without private facilities. Sheets and towel as well as morning sauna are included in the price.
Single room 42,40 € / night, double room 55,80 € / night (incl. breakfast and VAT)


IV EXCURSIONS

Please indicate your choices on the registration form. Extra tickets, if available, can also be purchased at the Registration and Information Desk.
The organisers reserve the right to cancel any tours for which there is insufficient demand (minimum 25 participants).


Sunday August 1st, at 16.00 – 17.30 Sightseeing tour of Helsinki
The audio city tour in several languages including Latin takes you to the most interesting parts of Helsinki. The tour starts from the Senate Square in front of the main building of the University and continues to the diplomatic quarters, the Presidential Palace, City Hall, the Parliament building, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House. There will be a stop at the Sibelius Monument and, when possible, the Church cut in rock (Temppelinaukio Church). The tour ends at the Senate Square in time for the Opening Ceremony of the Congress.

Wednesday August 4th, 2004 at 14.00 – 19.30 Tour to Porvoo
Our guided bus tour to Porvoo, the second oldest town in Finland after Turku, starts from the Senate Square.
Porvoo is a charming small town which has been loved by poets and painters. You will walk the narrow streets bordered by old wooden houses, see the home of Finland's national poet J. L. Runeberg and visit the medieval church up on the hill. Afternoon tea will be served at Haikko Manor before returning back to Helsinki.

V GENERAL INFORMATION
Helsinki can be reached easily by air from all major cities of the world. The flight to Helsinki takes about 3–4 hours from Europe and about 8 hours from North America (the east coast). The drive to the city centre from the Helsinki–Vantaa airport takes about 30 minutes. A taxi costs ca. 25 €, and the Finnair City Bus and bus 615 (every 15-20 minutes, ca. 5 €) take you to the city terminal at the railway station. There are also daily ferry connections from Stockholm and Tallinn to Helsinki.


Helsinki has an efficient public transportation system including bus, tram, metro and train services. Tickets can be purchased at R-Kioski newsagents, metro stations and from tram and bus drivers.


The University main building is situated in the heart of Helsinki next to the Senate Square. Tram stops in Aleksanterinkatu, the Kaisaniemi metro station and the central railway station are all within a 5 minutes' walking distance.
