he Virgin Mary is one of the most frequent subjects of the Coptic homilies, and the Coptic traditions on the Virgin have been often studied. But, owing to the awkward situation of the manuscripts, it is still necessary to clarify the relationship between the fragments containing texts on the Virgin Mary, and the homilies presently known to deal with the same subject, and many isolated fragments which appear to belong to homilies on that subject. The
results of such a study are published in this book.
It lists 36 homilies, 20 complete codices, 19 reconstructed codices, and a number of fragments.

The book also proposes a new kind of terminology for the description both of the manuscript tradition and of the literary tradition, because the usual terminology is too prone to misunderstanding in such a camplicated situation as that of the Coptic manuscripts and texts. Therefore the book includes a list and explanation of the new terminology.
