Inscribed Artifacts - Ostraca
Three potsherds, partly covered with hieratic texts, were found.
The first ostracon is a "false Qena Ware" sherd, 12.5 cm x 10.0 cm x 1.5 cm, with seven incomplete lines of text, consisting of a scribal account in hieratic.
The second ostracon is a "false Qena Ware" sherd, 8.5 cm x 6.7 cm x 1.3 cm, with only three clearly readable signs in hieratic. On the first line is the number "200" (the second part of the number is probably to be read as "60"). On the second line is the group p+wn, (Pwnt?), and the next three signs can probably be understood as completing the toponym "Punt." The beginning of the word "remnyt" (district) can possibly be recognized at the end of the second line. This inscription is more similar to those on jar-labels than administrative ones on potsherds. A parallel for part of this text can be found on a hieratic inscription from Wadi Gawasis published by Sayed (1983: Fig. 1).
The third ostracon is a Nile Red Silt sherd, 12.3 cm x 9.7 cm x 1.15 cm, with four recognizable but incomplete lines of text. The inscription on the second line is probably about a "gang(?) of 50 workers."
