Mersa/Wadi Gawasis 2009 Report, by Rodolfo Fattovich, Andrea Manzo - University of Naples "l'Orientale," Naples, Italy, and Chiara Zazzaro - University of Exeter, Exeter, UK

WG 60

This excavation unit was planned to investigate Feature 7. Excavations demonstrated that originally Feature 7 was a mound of coral rocks with a horse-shoe shape aligned along a SE-NW axis. Similar to Feature 6, which was excavated in 2003-2004 (Bard & Fattovich 2007: 42-43), Feature 7 contained an internal room, delimited by two conglomerate stone slabs, which opened to the sea.
At least two phases of use of the horse-shoe shaped structure could be recognized. These phases are represented by the two floors (SU13, SU19) abutting the stone slabs (SU14, SU15) to the east. Two hearths (SU16, SU17) dated to the last phases of use and were possibly associated with offering activities such as in Feature 6 (Bard & Fattovich 2007: 42). Large fragments of limestone anchors were also found on the two floors (SU13, SU19) at the room's entry, as in other similar structures at Mersa/Wadi Gawasis (Bard & Fattovich 2007: 39-43).
The few potsherds associated with this structure can be ascribed to the 12th Dynasty.
